What is Midjourney?
Midjourney V7 is the current production model (as of April 2026). It handles photorealistic work, artistic styles, and fine detail better than earlier V5 and V6 versions. Midjourney continues to lead on pure aesthetic quality — other generators have closed the gap but not matched it.
Pricing (April 2026)
There is no free tier. Midjourney discontinued free generations in 2024 and hasn’t restored them. A paid plan is required to use the service at all.
- Basic — $10/month ($8/month annual): ~3.3 fast GPU hours (~200 images).
- Standard — $30/month ($24/month annual): 15 fast GPU hours plus unlimited Relax mode.
- Pro — $60/month ($48/month annual): 30 fast hours, unlimited Relax mode, Stealth mode (private generations).
- Mega — $120/month ($96/month annual): 60 fast hours, top tier for heavy commercial use.
All plans include commercial use rights. Annual billing saves ~20%.
Who Midjourney Is For
Designers, illustrators, marketers, product teams, and anyone who needs premium AI image quality and doesn’t mind a $10+/month floor.
What We Love: The Pros
- Still the aesthetic gold standard — other generators look amateur in comparison on artistic work
- V6.1 significantly improved hand and face rendering
- All plans include commercial use rights
- Mega tier covers even heavy production use
- Stealth mode keeps generations private (Pro and above)
The Honest Cons
- No free tier — can’t try before paying
- Runs on Discord (moved to native web app in 2024-25 but still Discord-centric for power users)
- Weaker than competitors at generating legible text in images
- $120/month Mega tier is steep if you only need occasional images
Our Verdict
Midjourney is worth the $10-$30/month floor if image quality is central to your work. If you only need occasional images, Adobe Firefly’s free tier or DALL-E 3 (bundled with ChatGPT Plus) deliver commercially-usable results for less. But when artistic quality matters, Midjourney V7 still wins.
